    911 is the number to save. The Jordanian government portal still publishes the older direct lines as well, which are useful if you know exactly which service you need:

    What to say when the call connects

    Callers under stress tend to describe panic rather than facts. Give the operator four things in this order: exactly where you are (the neighbourhood and nearest landmark, not a postal address), what happened, how many people are hurt, and whether the person is conscious and breathing. Then do not hang up — the operator may talk you through life-saving steps until the ambulance arrives.

    When to call an ambulance vs. drive in yourself

    This is where most people get it wrong. Call 911 and wait — do not drive — in these situations:

    • Chest pain or pressure spreading to the arm or jaw
    • Severe difficulty breathing, or lips turning blue
    • Stroke signs: sudden numbness, facial droop, slurred speech
    • Heavy bleeding that does not stop with pressure
    • Major trauma, a road traffic accident, or a fall from height
    • Loss of consciousness, or a seizure that does not stop

    In all of these, treatment begins inside the ambulance, and moving the patient in a private car can make the injury worse — particularly with head and spinal trauma.

    If the problem is urgent but stable — a cut that needs stitches, a suspected fracture, a high fever, an infection, persistent vomiting, or a sports injury — driving straight to a 24-hour emergency department is usually faster than waiting for an ambulance.
